My wife first brought home her Singer Slant O Matic 500a Rocketeer, (I just can’t get over that name “Rocketeer”) I remember wondering where she was going to put this big sewing machine.  It was a table style sewing machine that was very big.  You could tell this thing was worth something, even though I do not know how to price sewing machines.  I was impressed she got this great machine for free.

We promptly put this Slant O Matic in the basement and noticed we had no idea how to use a sewing machine.  We had a hard time getting any threading information for the Singer 500a machine.  I did find out through Ebay that the Singer Slant O Matic 500a Rocketeer was touted as “the Best Machine Ever Made” by the Singer Sewing Company.  The instruction manual actually had that slogan printed on it.

These were made in the 1960’s and were one of the last models of Singer Sewing machines to be made entirely of metal.  The engines on the 500a are enough to impress even the NASCAR sewing fans, if there are any of you out there.  Its sleek futuristic design and name “The Rocketeer”, shows Singer’s concept that the Slant O Matic was the sewing machine for the sixties.

When they were first produced the Slant O Matic 500a Rocketeer sold for a few hundred dollars, even now they fetch quite a bit on the ebay and antiques markets.  The original price and maintained value are a few signatures of the quality Singer put into this model.  This sewing machine is heavy duty and built for a hundred years of service.

We did come across pay services for sewing machine instructions, but why pay for the instructions if we received this machine for free?  Not finding any free threading instructions, we gave up and our majestic Singer Slant O Matic 500a Rocketeer gathered dust in our basement.   That was until our son arrived.  We love him to death, but he loves to make a mess out of everything.  I won’t bore you with the details (The whole story can be found here.), but we needed to get our couch covered quickly.

We were able to find some cheap fabric and someone kind enough to show us how to get started and now we use our Slant O Matic 500a to make covers for our poor stained couch.   It’s a fun sewing machine to use, easy enough for a guy too!

If you have a Singer (Slant O Matic) 500a hopefully, you will find these threading instructions , bobbin winding instructions and sample stitch patterns helpful, even if you have no idea how to start.
